Strange. Exotic. Different. Spicy. Colors. CURRY. These are a few of the words that associate themselves with this ever growing cuisine of India. For some of us, they are positive, inviting, and exciting beckons to the sights, smells, and sounds of an Indian restaurant. However, for some of us- it’s scary. It’s strange. It’s…not normal! Similar to those feelings, this isn’t normal for me. Writing a blog about my restaurant? What kind of person wants to read what I have to say about my restaurant and it’s menu? It’s drinks? It’s everything?
Well..that’s what brings us together here. We are the same on a few levels. We either LOVE this cuisine, are CURIOUS about this cuisine, or have been to Coriander before. (I’m going to hope it’s all three) The purpose of this blog is simple- to inform, educate, and satisfy you curious cats about the culinary art I am so passionate about.
My name is Shawn Nagpal- the founder(fancy, huh?) of Coriander- Modern Indian in Larchmont. I am 25 years old, obsessed with the culinary world, and the hospitality business. It started when I was a kid, and I would pretend I was on a Food Network program “making” pre-packaged ramen noodles. I realized it was something I enjoyed, something that sparked a passion in me. It was taken to another level when my father opened his first restaurant, and I got the chance to be a bus boy at the ripe age of 14. All I did was pour water, serve amuse bouche, rinse and repeat. It hit me quickly that I enjoyed the social aspect of service, and the spiritual aspect of satisfying guests in a primal sort of way- food. What else is better than hearing someone say you’ve fed them, made them happy, and now they’ll pay you for it? I mean…it’s like magic.
However, when it came time to open my very own restaurant, I wanted to do something different. Years of eating in Indian restaurants led me believe that nothing was different. If I closed my eyes and ate from 4 different bowls- they would all taste similar. I decided I was on a mission to not only disrupt the Indian restaurant world, but to educate, excite, and emphasize the passion I have for this food to all my guests. This culminated in Coriander- Modern Indian. The ONLY boutique style Indian restaurant where the menus are on iPads that change seasonally, with a heavy emphasis on fresh, healthy, and contemporary techniques. Not to mention, within our first year we’ve managed to amass awards from The Journal News, The Scarsdale Inquirer, The New York Times, “Best of Westchester”, Yelp Awards, and many more.
In any case, stay tuned for more posts about Coriander, Recipes, the Indian Food World, The Restaurant World, and whatever else enters my head. I look forward to great conversation, feedback, and most of all- educating all of you on something we all love. Food.
